4 Things You Should Do In Busan

Busan is the second most populated city in South Korea. It is located at the southern most tip of the country. Known as the port city, it’s the perfect place for beaches, mountains and temples.

I was very excited to visit Busan. This trip was special because I was able to travel with friends, who are also English teachers in Korea. I haven’t seen them since orientation in August. It was nice being together in such a colorfulness place. Because of our busy teaching schedules, we visited Busan during the weekend, leaving us with only a full day to explore the beautiful city.

Getting to Busan

Busan Station

One of the easiest ways to get to Busan Station is by train. However, depending where you’re traveling from, buses are available too. I traveled via the KTX train from my province to Seoul, then from Seoul to Busan. (Approx cost from Seoul to Busan: $55 – $65 one way) It’s takes about two hours and thirty minutes to get there. Here’s the link to purchase tickets online. You can purchase tickets up to a month in advance.

There is a famous Korean film called, “Train To Busan.” It’s a zombie apocalypse action thriller that takes place on a train going to Busan. It’s safe to say my trip there was zombie free and quite peaceful.

Here are 4 things you should do in Busan:

1. Visit the Gamcheon Cultural Village (감천문화마을)

부산광역시 사하구 감내2로 203 (감천동)

It’s free! Did I mention it’s free? Feel free to roam around this village and visit the local stores and cafes. It’s a beautiful town located in the Saha District, on the coastal side of Busan. When you arrive you’ll immediately notice the picturesque bright painted houses. The area was built during the 1920s and 30s. This village is filled with steep streets, twisting alleys, as well as murals and sculptures created by residents.

While you’re there, visit this little museum that is actually called, “Little Museum,” to explore the village’s rich history.

2. Visit Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장)

Haeundae Traditional Market
Street Food at Haeundae Traditional Market for 1000 won. (Approx. $0.95)

If you’re looking for a great place to visit for it’s nightlife, this is it. There are many things to explore such as cultural roads, Haeundae Traditional Market, other shopping stores, landscape views (even in winter), and of course the beach.  Don’t forget to try the seafood from local restaurants and street food from the Haeundae Traditional Market.

3. Visit the Haeundae Lighting Festival

Busan Lighting Festival

From November 16, 2019 until January 27, 2020 there’s a beautiful light show around Gunam-ro Haeundae Square and Haeundae Beach. It’s a must see. The LED light decor resembles glowing sea waves and embraces the holiday spirit. The landscape of Busan is serene at night. The sounds of the waves rushing to the shores creates a cheery ambiance.

There are variety of programs going on during this time. Visitors can hang their new-year wish on the luminous wishing tree in Haeundae Square or watch live performances from locals.

4. Take advantage of many picture zones.

The cultural village is a very interactive place to take pictures. You can find many props to take photos with or locations over looking the coast. The beach is also filled with a variety of picture zones perfect during a night out.
